High-Protein Chocolate Chip Banana Bread with Cinnamon Crumble
High-protein banana bread with dark chocolate chips and whole-grain oat cinnamon crumble.

Most traditional banana bread is closer to cake than bread — a dense loaf loaded with processed sugars and refined flours that sends blood glucose climbing rapidly, followed by an exhausting mid-morning crash. This recipe was formulated with deliberate nutritional architecture: natural sweetness comes primarily from ripe bananas, structure is supported by complex whole-wheat flour and whey protein, and tender richness comes from unsweetened Greek yogurt and a modest touch of butter.

The result is a delicious loaf you can genuinely slice, toast, and enjoy for breakfast or a hearty afternoon snack without metabolic guilt. The bakery-style cinnamon crumble on top gives it an authentic coffeehouse finish, and the dark chocolate chips — calibrated to a sensible 30 grams — provide genuine antioxidant richness without a heavy sugar spike.

Why This Works for Blood Sugar

By pairing dietary fiber (3g) with bioavailable protein (6g) and healthy fats, the glycemic release of the banana's natural sugars is tempered. Enjoy a warm slice paired with scrambled eggs or a spoonful of Greek yogurt for a truly balanced diabetic-friendly meal.

Ingredients

Makes one loaf (approx. 20 × 10 cm) — yielding 12 satisfying slices

Banana Bread Batter

  • Ripe bananas, mashed 2 medium
  • Large pasture-raised eggs 2 large
  • Plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt 120 g
  • Unsalted butter, melted 30 g
  • Pure vanilla extract 1 tsp
  • Whole-wheat flour 120 g
  • Unflavoured whey protein powder 30 g
  • Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) 1 tsp
  • Ground cinnamon ½ tsp
  • Fine sea salt ¼ tsp
  • Dark chocolate chips (70%+ cocoa) 30 g
  • Erythritol or monk fruit sweetener (optional) 1–2 tbsp

Golden Cinnamon Crumble

  • Whole-wheat flour 25 g
  • Rolled oats 15 g
  • Unsalted butter, melted 15 g
  • Granulated erythritol (optional) 1 tbsp
  • Ground cinnamon ½ tsp

Preparation Method

Hands-on time: 15 minutes • Oven bake time: 40–50 minutes

  1. Preheat & Line: Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Line a standard small loaf tin (approximately 20 × 10 cm / 8 × 4 in) with non-stick baking parchment paper, leaving a slight overhang for easy lifting.
  2. Mash Bananas: In a large mixing bowl, thoroughly mash the ripe bananas with a fork until smooth with minimal lumps remaining.
  3. Whisk Wet Ingredients: Add the eggs, Greek yogurt, melted butter, and vanilla extract into the mashed bananas. Whisk vigorously until silky and fully integrated.
  4. Whisk Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole-wheat flour, unflavoured protein powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt so leaveners are evenly distributed.
  5. Combine Gently: Fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a spatula just until combined — do not overmix, which keeps the crumb delicate. If the batter feels overly stiff, add 1–2 tablespoons of water or unsweetened almond milk.
  6. Fold Dark Chocolate: Gently fold in the 70% dark chocolate chips, reserving a small pinch to press onto the loaf surface if desired.
  7. Make Cinnamon Crumble: In a small bowl, combine whole-wheat flour, rolled oats, cinnamon, and erythritol. Drizzle in melted butter and stir with a fork until small, fragrant crumbles form.
  8. Assemble: Pour the banana batter evenly into the lined loaf tin. Generously scatter the cinnamon crumble over the entire surface.
  9. Bake: Bake for 40–50 minutes. Test the centre with a wooden skewer; it should come out clean without wet batter. If the crumble topping browns quickly at minute 30, tent loosely with a piece of foil.
  10. Cool & Slice: Allow the loaf to rest in the pan for 10–15 minutes. Lift out using the parchment overhang onto a wire cooling rack. Cool completely before slicing for perfect, clean slices.

Nutritional Notes & Substitutions

Practical diabetic culinary guidance from our kitchen

Protein Boost: Combining unsweetened Greek yogurt, whole eggs, and quality whey protein raises the protein density per slice significantly compared to store-bought banana bread, helping stabilize post-prandial glucose curves.
Zero Refined Sugars: Never add maple syrup, honey, agave, or white sugar. The sweetness naturally blossoms from ripe bananas and optional erythritol/allulose which do not raise blood sugar.
Portion Awareness: Slice into 12 even pieces. We recommend enjoying one slice at a time and tracking your post-meal glucose response with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) or fingerstick glucometer.
Dairy-Free Alternative: Swap the Greek yogurt for plain unsweetened soy or coconut yogurt, replace melted butter with virgin coconut oil, and substitute unflavoured pea or pumpkin seed protein powder.
Storage & Freezing: Store in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. You can also freeze individually wrapped slices for up to 3 months — they toast beautifully right out of the freezer!
